An immunization procedure to control Brucella ovis (Buddie, Citation1956) infection in rams first became freely available in New Zealand in 1957. The method involves the simultaneous inoculaion of rams at different sites with Br. abortus strain 19 vaccine and killed Br. ovis organisms in a saline-in-oil emulsion. This method of control became widely practised and, in the first twelve months following its introduction, more than 250,000 rams were immunized. The extensive adoption of this procedure has been responsible for a marked reduction in ram wastage- and has also provided indirectly a convenient and economical means of reducing perinatal losses in lambs due to this specific infection.
