This is the second time this conference has been held at Lincoln — the last time being in 1948. Since then, there have been great changes in the veterinary profession which have gone hand in hand with great changes in New Zealand farming. On the land, these changes can best be exemplified by the big increase in our sheep population which has risen from 32 million in 1947 to 52 million in 1964. In the same way, wool production has risen from 362 million lb, in 1947, to 617 million lb last year. In fact, in 1962–63 it was even higher at 620 million lb. During this period, too, the veterinary profession has made rapid progress, increasing numerically from just over 100 veterinarians to over 400.
