British literature on disease caused by Hyostrongylus rubidus is scanty. Text-books (Monnig, Citation1950; Cameron, Citation1951; Lapage, Citation1956) refer to infestations being common in England but their occurrence in Scotland is mentioned only in the B.V.A. Handbook on Pig Diseases (Citation1956); and Nicolson and Gordon (Citation1959) refer to an outbreak in Perthshire. The writer has seen four major outbreaks, one in Northern Ireland, one in Yorkshire and recently two in the Aberdeen area. Four others have been diagnosed in the Aberdeen area but have not been investigated. The disease may be more widespread in Scotland than is generally recognized.
