The control of the spread of mastitis infection by good hygiene in the milking shed has long been advocated but the methods used have varied in their efficiency and practicability. Moller (Citation1957) reported good results in the control of Streptococcus agalactiae infection when running water was used to wash the udder, and teat cups were dipped in Chlorhexidine solution between cows. However, many farmers find that dipping cups is irksome and, unless it is carefully done, it becomes ineffective.
