Salmonellosis of adult sheep due to Salmonella typhimurium was first recognizedand confirmed bacteriologically in New Zealand in 1949 (CitationSalisbury, 1958). Subsequently, numerous outbreaks have been identified. A review of salmonella infections in animals and birds has illustrated the widespread geographical distribution of the pathogen in New Zealand (CitationSalisbury, 1958). CitationNottingham and Urselmann (1961) recovered salmonellae from an impressive percentage of apparently healthy animals slaughtered at an Auckland abattoir. The predominant species recovered was Salm. typhimurium, and the principal source of the organisms appeared to be on the farms from which animals were obtained.
