Fasciola hepatica has become increasingly widespread in New Zealand in recent years following the colonization of large areas of the country by the exotic snail Lymnaea columella (Pullan, Citation1969; Pullan and Whitten, Citation1972; Pullan et al., Citation1972). In October 1969, F. hepatica was found to be established in sheep and cattle on a farm 40 km from Palmerston North in an area previously regarded as free of fluke infection.
