Sir,—Williams Smith (Citation1962, Citation1967) has presented extensive reviews on the effects of the use of antibacterial drugs. These reviews discuss amongst other subjects the effects these drugs may have on the emergence of resistant strains of bacteria. The later paper (Williams Smith, Citation1967) emphasizes that, in the Enterobacteriaceae, these drug-resistant strains may be carrying R-factors (the resistance transfer factor plus the gene determinant for resistance to one or more drugs). When present, the R-factor has the potential of transferring antibacterial drug resistance to as many as six drugs at anyone time (Williams Smith, Citation1966).
