Increasing stocking rates and rearing of dairy calves for beef production have accentuated the problem of parasitic gastroenteritis on New Zealand farms in recent years. Many outbreaks have even defied the generally recommended control measures of rotational grazing (McMeekan, Citation1947, Citation1955) and/or drenching with wide-spectrum anthelmintics. These outbreaks have been largely restricted to calves and yearlings and have been most common during autumn and winter.
