Assheton Citation(1898) recovered ova from the oviduct of the ewe and concluded that they entered the uterus in the eight-cell stage early on the third day following coitus. Since this early work, a number of investigators have confirmed, in general, the time taken for ova to travel the length of the oviduct (McKenzie and Allen, Citation1933; Clark, Citation1934; Green and Winters, Citation1935; Kelley, Citation1937; Winterberger, Citation1953; Winterberger-Torres, Citation1961). However, insufficient information has been obtained on the character of ovum movement within the oviduct. For instance, in the rabbit it has been shown that ova are transported rapidly through the upper portion of the ampulla but move only spasmodically along the lower part of the ampulla (Harper, Citation1961).
