In recent years there have been a number of virus epidemics occurring in hitherto free areas, which have remained undetected for considerable periods of time. In some instances this has been due to uncharacteristic behaviour of the virus, and in others apparently due to the veterinarians being unfamiliar with the clinical manifestations of the disease. This article has been written to draw attention to some of these recorded variants, in the hope that it may be of benefit to practitioners and others whose opportunity to keep abreast of international literature is limited.
