Abstract

Extract

Elbow dysplasia in the dog was first reported by Stiern (Citation1956) who considered the condition to be due to ectopic sesamoid bones in the triceps tendon and likened it to patella cubiti in man. Hare (Citation1962) believed that this defect had been occurring in dogs for some considerable time and stated that it could be diagnosed from the records of a Basset-Saluki cross-bred dog which died in 1936. Cawley and Archibald (Citation1959) were first to describe this lesion as ununited anconeal process and reported its presence in the German Shepherd in the United States. There have been further reports from Britain, Sweden, Germany and Canada of ununited anconeal process occurring in St. Bernards, Irish Wolfhounds, Labrador Retrievers, Great Danes, Basset Hounds and French Bulldogs.
