Sir,—Twenty-nine cows were killed instantly by lightning stroke in a fenced lane at Waimana near Opotiki on December 21, 1969. There was a severe electrical storm in the area and a neighbour had observed forked lightning over the farm concerned. The number of animals killed represented one-tenth of the milking herd. The owner at first att1'ibuted the deaths to bloat, but after almost 24 hours he sought a veterinary opinion.
