May I be excused for suggesting that the title of this symposium should be “The changing role of the veterinarian in the agricultural scene in New Zealand” because I am convinced that the agricultural scene is not changing significantly, at least as far as the livestock industries are concerned. On the other hand, I am equally convinced that the role of the veterinarian servicing these industries is changing and must change even faster in the future. This, mainly for the reason that for the first time in the profession's history, the number of veterinarians is becoming adequate to allow it to practise its true role — that of preventive medicine.
