Abstract

Extract

Sir,-Leptospirae have been isolated infrequently from domestic cats. The first recorded isolation, serotype icterohaemorrhagiae, was by Mertens (Citation1938). The Leptospiral Serotype Distribution List ,(Citation1966) contains seven references to isolations of leptospirae of which only one is for serotype pomona (Gordon-Smith et al., Citation1961). It has also been demonstrated (Ferris and Andrews, Citation1962; Fessler and Morter, Citation1964) that cats can be experimentally infected with pomona with consequent histological changes in organs and leptospiruria lasting for several months. Leptospirae have not been isolated from cats in New Zealand. Rees (Citation1964) reported a titre of 1/3,000 to pomona in the serum of a sick cat. On post-mortem examination, the cat showed lesions of nephritis and icterus which were suggestive of leptospirosis. We wish to record the isolation of Leptospira serotype pomona from a domestic farm cat from the Hauraki Plains area of New Zealand.
