Viruses responsible for most respiratory diseases in cats still remain the major cause of concern to many cat breeders, especially pedigree owners. Two separate and distinct types of viruses appeared to be the main pathogens causing the syndrome known locally as “snuffles” in Dunedin (Brehaut et al, Citation1969; Tan, Citation1970) as well as in other parts of New Zealand (Barbara F. Smith, pers. comm.). These are herpes-virus and several serologically distinct picornaviruses.
