Abstract

Extract

Social animalsi.e., animals which associate in herds, flocks or packs—are an integral part of New Zealand farming systems. Each of these domestic species has peculiar behaviour patterns associated with the establishment of, and maintenance of the social bond, as part of their species-specific behaviour repertoire. Four examples of the interaction between species-specific social behaviour and present-day husbandry techniques are considered.
