Abstract

Extract

Mebendazole (methyl 5(6)benzoyl 1–2 benzimidazole carbamate) has recently been shown to have high anthelmintic efficacy against a wide range of benzimidazole-susceptible equine nematodes (Callear and Neave, Citation1971; Walker and Knight, Citation1972; Bennett, Citation1973; Bradley and Radhakrishnan, Citation1973; Neave and Callear, Citation1973; Reinecke and LeRoux, Citation1973). However, its activity against equine cestodes is generally reported to be unsatisfactory — e.g., Bradley and Radhakrishnan Citation(1973), using mebendazole at a dose rate of 9 mg/kg (administered either per os or by stomach tube), did not observe significant anthelmintic efficacy against Anoplocephala spp. in horses. Similar results were reported by Drudge et al. Citation(1974) for mebendazole (8.8 mg/kg administered by stomach tube) against both Anoplocephala magna and A. perfoliata.
