Sir, — The yeast Pityrosporum pachydermatis is one of the most frequent micro-organisms associated with otitis externa in dogs. Gustafson (Citation1955) succeeded in experimentally producing a mild otitis by instilling suspensions of the ycast into the car canal of dogs but the role of micro-organisms in general in the aetiology of the disease has been questioned by Fraser (Citation1965) and others. Fraser concluded from comparisons of otitic and healthy ears that bacteria and fungi are not important causative agents of the disease. Their role in aggravating and prolonging the condition is, however, more well known.
