Veterinary public health is an increasingly important facet of veterinary science with a very wide scope (Anon., Citation1975), and must be the concern of every veterinarian. The emphasis given to veterinary public health in the major veterinary schools in the world varies considerably, tending to reflect the country's statutory requirements for veterinary involvement in food hygiene and the degree of acceptance by public health authorities of the role of veterinarians in a more general field of public health.
