The Lightcast system of limb immobilisation

Abstract

Extract

Prior to the use of internal devices for reducing and immobilizing limb fractures, external splints and plaster casts were used. In such circumstances it was necessary to carefully assess the value of the animal and the nature of the problem, before deciding if treatment was warranted. Careful assessment is still important to-day; however, with modem internal fixation equipment, less favourable cases are attempted. In general most failures result from inadequate support during recovery from anaesthesia.
