The efficacy of oxfendazole against natural infections of nematodes in cattle

Pages 162-164 | Published online: 23 Feb 2011

Abstract

Oxfendazole (2.5 mg/kg) was tested against natural infections of nematodes in cattle in a dual experiment. The first part was designed to coincide with the late autumn-winter, Cooperia oncophora, larval-inhibition peak, whereas the second part was to coincide with the late winter-spring, Ostertagia ostertagi, larval-inhibition peak.

Oxfendazole was 85.7% and 763% effective against third, and early-fourth, stages of Ostertagia sp.; 68.4% and 71.1% against late-fourth-stage larvae, some of which would have been early-fourth-stage at treatment; 89.5% and 86.6% against immature-fifth-stage; and 98.8% and 97.9% against adult Ostertagia sp. Efficacy was 96.2% and 98.8% against third, and early-fourth stage Cooperia sp.; 91.8% and 99.6% against late-fourth stage, some of which would have been early-fourth-stage at treatment; 99.5% and 983% against immature-fifth-stage; and 99.9% and 100% against adults. It was 99.7%–100% effective against all stages of Trichostrongylus axei, 94.6%–100% against all stages of Trichostrongylus colubriformis, and 93%–973% against all stages of Nematodirus helvetianus. Efficacy was 61.6% and 100% against fourth-stage Trichuris sp., 84.7% and 95.1% against immature-fifth-stage, and 89.2% and 98.6% against adult Trichuris sp.
