Sir. — In outbreaks of salmonellosis, loss of weight, drastically reduced performance, slow or incomplete recovery, and a high death rate, are all part of the disease. When endemic among potentially valuable individuals, treatment is drawn out, costly and often unrewarding. High stocking densities, introduction of animals from outside sources, susceptible young arriving seasonally, and risks of facial eczema, are several good reasons why owners resist preventive procedures that threaten, or cannot be readily fitted into, established management practice.
