Sir, — In the most recent issue of Farm Outlook, which emanates from ICI Tasman Ltd, is an anonymous article headed “The Rumen by-pass”. In it it is claimed that operation of the oesophageal groove reflex in ruminants will decrease the efficacy of benzimidazoles (so-called “white drenches”) against gastrointestinal nematodes by diverting all or part of a dose of drench directly into the omasum and abomasum. Subsequently an advertisement carrying a similar message appeared in the national press (see The Dominion, Tuesday, February 3rd 1981).
