Selenium regulations

Pages 46-47 | Published online: 23 Feb 2011

Abstract

Sir:- Late last year Council of the NZVA was advised that the Selenium Regulations were to be reviewed by the Animal Remedies Board. Council was asked to make a submission giving the NZVA's position on these Regulations. Members of Council were aware of opinion outside the profession that considers the current Regulations to be unnecessarily restrictive. However, it was felt that technical considerations still supported the restricted status given to a majority of seleniumcontaining animal remedies by the Regulations. Council therefore decided to circulate a questionnaire amongst a sample of rural veterinary practices to determine if the original concerns regarding the need for restricted access to selenised animal remedies, and drench in particular, still applied. It was also decided to determine whether farmers were being disadvantaged by the current Regulations with regards to the availability and cost of selenised remedies.
