Abstract

Extract

Madam:– Poisoning of dogs by Compound 1080 (sodium monofluoroacetate) during vertebrate pest control operations is relatively common and a cause of concern to farmers. Precautions against such poisoning include secure chaining, fitting of protective muzzles or biting chains, and adequate feeding to reduce the tendency for dogs to eat poisoned carcasses.(Citation8) If the dog is seen to eat a carcass then emetic capsules, containing 1 g of zinc sulphate and obtainable from local Pest Boards, may have some protective value if given straightaway.
