S. K. Stein is Professor of Mathematics at the University of California, Davis. He has published in algebra, convex bodies, and topology, and his pedagogical interests are represented by four texts: Mathematics, The Man-Made Universe; Introductory Algebra, A Guided Inquiry (with C.
