Notes

1 I presented an analysis of this novel in The 18th Annual Conference of the South Asian Literary Association under the title “Gendered Citizenship and the Chitmahals.” However, the paper for the conference focused substantially on the definition and function of the chitmahals and how these chits effect the citizenship of the inhabitants. Even though the conference paper mentions care community, I develop that in depth in this paper. This paper’s idea is original in the sense it focuses on the agency of Bangladeshi women. The translation of the excerpts from the Bangla novel is exclusively mine and I have changed the language to fit the argument of this paper.
