Abstract

The author presents a series of 102 consecutive patients who had suffered corneal lacerations and traumatic cataracts. Optical aphakic rehabilitation for these eyes consisted of nothing in non-seeing or severely traumatized eyes. Glasses, contact lenses, intraocular lenses and epikeratophakia grafts were used in eyes with visual potential. The “known” failure rate of the contact lens wearers was 52%. Fifteen (52%) of the 29 contact lens failure patients opted for an IOL, two patients received epikeratophakia grafts, one selected glasses and 11 (31%) patients refused additional optical aphakic correction. Forty-five patients received primary IOLs and 15 patients received secondary IOL implantation. Patients receiving contact lens achieved similar visual results to those receiving IOLs. Fifty percent of the contact lens and 56% of the IOL patients achieved 20/20 to 20/40 corrected visual acuity.
