Abstract
This paper describes the excavations of an area of North Hampshire chalk land designated for housing development at Cowdery's Down, Basingstoke, Hampshire (SU657532). The site produced evidence of activity from the Bronze Age to the Civil War which is dealt with sequentially. The bulk of the report deals with an extensive early medieval settlement which produced well preserved and detailed evidence for timber architecture of the sixth and seventh centuries A.D., and includes a detailed study of material recovered from the site. The excavation records and finds are deposited with Hampshire County Museum Service under the accession number A. 1978. 1.
