Iron-Working in North-West Wales in the Late Fourteenth Century

Pages 246-290 | Published online: 22 Dec 2014

Abstract

This paper is a detailed examination of the historical and archaeological evidence for later medieval iron-working in north-west Wales. The aim of the project was to see how far the historical records and archaeological sites could be linked and what they could tell us about the organization, production, and impact of this industry. The work on both the historical and archaeological evidence has shown that the iron industry in this area in the second half of the fourteenth century was a significant concern, reflecting the importance of iron at this time. The work raises a number of questions, which can only be solved by further work in all areas.
