The Early West Front of Lincoln Cathedral

Pages 134-164 | Published online: 20 Dec 2014

Abstract

The west front of Lincoln Cathedral is unique and complex and, despite the very plausible conjectures about its early development, there is still a debate as to what form the early cathedral took. This paper describes the preliminary results of a major resurvey of the western end of Lincoln cathedral. It establishes the sequence of building during the eleventh and twelfth centuries in an account which differs significantly from what has been previously written about the building.
