Abstract
This article has two main objects: First, it attempts to demonstrate how economic-historical research can methodically utilize the index-number problem, which appears when data concerning production and consumption within a not completely homogeneous totality are to be added together and combined in time series. Second, it shows that such a methodically restricted investigation based on a single commodity sector can produce also on a more macro-economic plane new aspects on established concepts about the economic-historical development.
