Pages 147-156 | Published online: 08 Nov 2010

Abstract

Uittreksel

Abstract

The deficiency of fodder in the arid and semi‐arid regions of the Republic of South Africa can be supplemented with drought resistant fodder crops, which are adapted to make better use of limited moisture in these areas. The‐ literature in this connection is reviewed and a complete discussion follows of the planting, management, utilisation and feeding value of two important drought resistant fodder crops, namely, spineless cactus (Opuntia spp.) and oldman sultbush (Atriplex nummularia). Mention is made of other promising drought resisttmt fodder crops.
