Abstract
An account is given of the performance and potential of various tropical legumes when grown in different sub‐tropical environments in Natal and Zululand.
The legumes Stylo (Stylosanthes guyanensis) and Siratro (Phaseolus atropurpureus) are well adapted to ecological conditions in the sub‐tropical coastal region. Under favourable typically tropical conditions greenleaf desmodium (D. intortum) was the most successful legume. In less tropical climates the two Desmodiums, greenleaf (D. intortum) and silverleaf (D. uncinatum) outyielded the other species tested.
