Number of camps for rotational grazing of veld

Abstract

The objective of camping veld (subdivision by fencing) is to permit rotational systems of utilization. The primary objectives in the application of rotational grazing to veld in Southern Africa are (i) to limit the period of stay so as to avoid grazing regrowth and (ii) to allow a sufficient period of absence for undisturbed regrowth of the grazed components. Further objectives of a rotational system may be the attainment of high stocking densities and the provision of long term rests. In the opinion of the authors and on the basis of published specifications for sound grazing management of veld, it would appear that the objectives of rotational systems can be adequately met by the provision of eight camps per group of animals.

Die doel van die afkamp van veld is om wisselweiding moontlik te maak. Die vernaamste mikpunte in die toe‐passing van wisselweiding in Suidelike Afrika is (i) om die weityd te beperk waardeur die beweiding van hergroei workout word, en (ii) om aan die heweide plante die geleentheid te gee om volkome te herstel. Verdere mikpunte van wisselweiding mag wees die verkryging van hoë veedigthede en die voorsiening van lang rusperiodes. Dit blyk dat, volgens die mening van die skrywers asook op basis van gepubliseerde aanbevelings vir doeltreffende veldbeheer, die doelstellings van wisselweidingstelsels die beste bevredig kan word deur die beskikbaarstelling van agt kampe per kudde.
