The effect of stocking rate and grazing system on the performance of beff steers grazing an

Abstract

Animal average daily growth shows a characteristic drop in the spring/early summer period (until 31 December), a slight increase over the mid‐summer period (January/February) and a rapid decline in autumn (March). Growth ranges from 0,8 to 0,5 kg/animal/day in spring/early summer and 0,25 to 0,5 kg/animal/day in mid‐summer according to stocking rate and pasture production. Animal performance is generally lower in the wetter seasons. At light stocking rate there was no significant difference between continuous and rotational grazing, whereas at high stocking rate the rotational system showed definite advantage particularly in a drier season.

Die gemiddelde daaglikse groei‐toename van die diere toon ‘n kenmerkende afplatting in die lente/vroeë somer periode (tot 31 Desember), ‘n geringe toename gedurende die mid‐somer periode (Januarie/Februarie) en h vinnige dating in die herfs (Maart). Groei wissel tussen 0,8 en 0,5 kg/dier/dag in die lente/vroeë somer en tussen 0,25 en 0,5 kg/dier/dag in die mid‐somer, afhangende van die veebelading en produksie van die weiding. Die prestasie van die diere is oor die algemeen laer gedurende nat seisoene. By die laer veebelding was daar geen betekenisvolle verskil tussen ‘n aanhoudende en wissehveiding‐stelsel nie. maar by dië hoe veebelading het die wisselweidingstelsel ‘n definitiewe voordeel getoon, veral in ‘n droë seisoen.
