The Land Surveyor In Northern Ireland Before The Coming Of The Ordnance Survey Circa 1840

Pages 102-109 | Published online: 26 Jan 2010

Abstract

Land surveyors played an important role in shaping the present landscape of Ireland. The evidence from contemporary newspaper advertisements in the Belfast News Letter is reviewed and it is shown that this source provides a valuable insight into the work activities of land surveyors. Six advertisements are quoted to demonstrate the nature of the evidence and a complete list of notices which appeared in the News Letter is printed at the end of the text.
