Abstract
The author reviews Freud's (Citation1914) seminal paper ‘On narcissism: an introduction’. Freud's paper is briefly set in the historical context of the evolution of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic theories, and Freud's metapsychology up to the publication of his Narcissism paper is outlined. A detailed and comprehensive description of the content of the paper is given, accompanied by commentary on, and critical analysis of, Freud's ideas. Freud's applications of his ideas about narcissism in relation to homosexuality, hypochondria and psychosis are elucidated and discussed. The author concludes by considering some of the influences of Freud's ideas about narcissism on Kleinian and post-Kleinian developments in psychoanalytic theory.
Dans cet article, l'auteur examine le texte princeps de Freud, “Pour introduire le narcissisme” (1914). Lo scritto di Freud viene brevemente inserito nel suo contesto storico di evoluzione della psicoanalisi e delle teorie psicoanalitiche, e viene delineata la metapsicologia di Freud fino alla pubblicazione del suo articolo sul Narcisismo. Viene data una descrizione ampia e dettagliata del contenuto dell'articolo, accompagnata da un commentario ed un'analisi critica delle idee di Freud. Vengono chiarite e discusse le applicazioni di Freud delle sue idee sul narcisismo in relazione all'omosessualità, all'ipocondria e alle psicosi. L'autore conclude considerando alcune delle influenze delle idee di Freud sul narcisismo sugli sviluppi Kleiniani e post-Kleiniani nella teoria psicoanalitica.
Der Autor rezensiert Freuds zentrale Schrift ‘Zur Einführung des Narzissmus’. Freuds Schrift wird kurz in den historischen Zusammenhang der Evolution der Psychoanalyse und psychoanalytischer Theorien gesetzt und es wird Freuds Metapsychologie bis zum Erscheinen seines Narzissmus Artikels skizziert. Es wird eine detaillierte und umfassende Beschreibung des Inhalts der Schrift gegeben, zusammen mit einem Kommentar über und der kritischen Analyse von Freuds Ideen. Es werden die Anwendugnen von Freuds Ideen über Narzissmuys bezüglich der Homosexualität, der Hypochondrie und Psychose beleuchtet und diskutiert, Zum Schluss betrachtet der Autor einige der Einflüsse von Freuds |Ideen zu Narzissmus auf kleinianische und post-kleinianische Entwicklungen in psychoanalytischer Theorie.

1 The author was trained in the Kleinian tradition and his commentary reflects this background. Other viewpoints can be found in a volume of 10 essays about Freud's ‘On narcissism: an introduction’, published by the International Psychoanalytic Association and written by psychoanalysts from theoretically diverse and geographically dispersed backgrounds (Sandler et al., Citation1991). More recently, Perelberg (Citation2005) gives a contemporary Freudian view of the paper and describes modern French views about narcissism.
