Ethnicity, gender and labour supply in New Zealand in 1986

Pages 199-218 | Published online: 10 Nov 2009

Abstract

Using a special tabulation of the 1986 Census of Population, the Heckman sample‐selectivity approach to labour supply estimation is used. This involves estimating probit equations determining participation, and hours‐worked equations that incorporate a correction for sample selectivity bias (i.e. the inverse Mill's ratio). Equations are estimated for each ethnic group, by gender. The set of explanatory variables include both economic and demographic effects, with a concentration on the latter in this paper. Significantly diverse effects, relating to participation and hours supplied, are illustrated for the different gender and ethnic groups.
