Abstract
More than 50 records and 100 specimens of the chiton Hanleya nagelfar (fam. Hanleyiidae) found on sponges, are reported. The records originate mainly from the Swedish west coast, western Norway, and from around the Faroes. This species (or “form”) is strongly associated with certain choristid sponges. Examination of stomach and gut contents shows that the chitons feed on the host sponges. The evolutionary advantages of this choice of habitat are discussed. A critical examination of morphologic criteria previously used to separate H. nagelfar from H. hanleyi showed that only the maximum size differs. Some traits in the biology, however, indicate that more than one species is involved. The variation in size and diet is compared with a similar case in the gastropod genus Emarginula (Fissurellidae, Archaeogastropoda).
