Abstract
Five specimens of the rarely reported Molgula mira (Ärnbäck-Christie-Linde, 1931) (Stolidobranchiata, Molgulidae) were found during an investigation of the associated fauna of the demosponge Stryphnus ponderosus (Bowerbank, 1866) from the Faroe Islands area enabling a redescription of the species.
The ascidians showed a special adaptation of the cavity inside the gut loop for incubation of the larvae. This is the first record of this kind of adaptation in ascidians.
The previous separation to the monotypic genus Xenomolgula was based on the absence of the right side gonad and the ‘reversed position’ of the left side gonad, respectively. These characters are, however, in the present investigation not regarded as having generic significance, and it is concluded that Molgula mira does not need a generic separation.
