« Salvia desoleana » Atzei et Picci, specie nuova di Sardegna.
Viene descritta una nuova specie di Salvia L., della Sez. Aethiopis Bentham, di Sardegna, alta per lo più oltre il metro, di norma camefita, in ogni parte e in ogni stadio ghiandolosa e profumata, a foglie cordato-ovate e ottuse, brattee fiorali erbacee verdi e presto caduche, calice campanulato-compresso a labbra divergenti e a labbro superiore ovato e a denti ravvicinati, corolla grande bianca o sfumata dal celeste al roseo-violetto; fiorisce da metà maggio a metà luglio. È nota finora per 4 stazioni, su substrato vario. Essa risulta poliploide (2n = 44) nei confronti di S. sclarea L. (2n = 22), rispetto alla quale presenta un certo macrosomatismo.
La nuova specie si dimostra di notevole interesse officinale per il profumo intenso e persistente, presentato anche nello stadio vegetativo, e per la biomassa di materiale distillabile e di droga che può fornire.
The authors give an account of a new species of Salvia L. (sect. Aethiopis Bentham) called S. desoleana, that is endemic of Sardinia (Italy). This species, of which the distribution is reported, is a chamaephyte, and besides of S. nutans L. it is the tallest sage of Europe, representing the second species of the sect. Aethiopis in Sardinia. Salvia desoleana differs from S. sclarea L. mainly by the calyx, which is compressed and shows an oval upper labium with quasi-confluent teeth, by herbaceous and caducous bracts and by an earlier flowering.
The new species is sweet-smelling and full of glands even in the leaves far from flowers. The latter characteristic makes this species very interesting for aromatic purposes.
