This paper presents the results of a research on the vegetation of Portofino promontory. By means of phytosociological studies the authors describe the following vegetation types: coastal rock communities (Crithmo-Staticetea); inland rock communities (Asplenie-tea rupestris); vegetation of the substrata deriving from rock weathering (Sedum album and Sedum reflexum communities); garigue; Ampelodesmos mauritanicus communities; Arbutus unedo and Erica arborea maquis; holm-oak wood (Quercetum ilicis galloprovinciale); Pinus halepensis and Pinus pinaster woods; thermophytic mixed wood; submesophytic mixed wood (Laburno-Ostryon carpinifoliae); mesophytic mixed wood (Physospermo-Quercetum petraeae); chestnut wood. Ecology, sociology and dynamics of each type are discussed. The vegetation dynamics on Portofino promontory develops within three orders (Quercetalia ilicis, Quercetalia pubescentis and Fagetalia sylvaticae), which often come into close contact and bring about complex mixed types; this territory is of great synchorologic importance and can rightly be regarded as a link between the mediterranean and centraleuropean regions.
