Ehrharta erecta Lam. from South Africa is naturalized in Italy where it occurs at present only in Portici near Naples and in Caserta. It has been recorded also in the town of Naples and near Rome where, at present, it has not been found. The taxonomy and the nomenclature of this species are examined. It is confirmed that E. panicea is conspecific with E. erecta and that this latter is the correct name for the species. It is furthermore established, on the basis of both herbarium specimens and observations in the field, that all the plants from Italy must be referred to E. erecta and not to E. delicatula Stapf as has recently been suggested. This confusion probably arose from some old descriptions and from a rather wide circumscription given to E. erecta in the last century and before E. delicatula was recognized as deserving specific status. At the moment E. erecta in Italy is circumscribed only in a very restricted area and it seems impossible for it to become more widespread.
