Problems of typification of the genus Isopyrum L. (Ranunculaceae)

Summary

The problem concerning the lectotypification of the generic name Isopyrum L. is extensively discussed. As result, they are shown the reasons why it has been chosen the type of I. fumarioides L. as type of the genus, so superseding the former designation of I. thalictroides L. as type species.

In such a context, the Linnaean species originally ascribed to the genus i.e. I. fumarioides, I. thalictroides and I. aquilegioides, are formally lectotypified. As to I. aquilegioides L., the designation of a true lectotype (Morison's fig. 5 of sect. XII, tab. I, in Pl. Hist. Univ. Oxon. 3. 1699) supersedes a prior incorrect choice of a herbarium specimen which can not be regarded, instead, as belonging to the original material. After its lectotypification, moreover, I. aquilegioides is definitively proved to be conspecific with I. thalictroides, and from a nomenclatural point of view it must be considered synonym of the latter.

The selection of 'LINN 717.1', type of I. fumarioides, as type of the genus Isopyrum, involves in any case a few nomenclatural changes, which may be different according to the different taxonomic treatment adopted for the Linnaean species. It is here accepted a recent taxonomic interpretation which regards I. fumarioides and I. thalictroides as separate under two distinct genera, named respectively Leptopyrum Reichenb., monotypic, and “Isopyrum L.” (really Isopyrum Reichenb.), which includes 4 species. Accordingly I. fumarioides L. is definitively treated under Isopyrum L., whereas I. thalictroides and the allied species I. ludlowii Tamura et LauenerI. anemonoides Kar. et Kir., I. manshuricum (Kom.) Kom. ex W.T. Wang et Hsiao, are renamed under the generic name Thalictrella A. Richard (type: Clusius's table in Rar. Pl. Hist. 233. 1601 sub “Ranunc. praecox II. Thalictrifol."; type of I. thalictroides L.): Thalictrella thalictroides (L.) E. Nardi, comb nov.; T. ludlowii (Tamura et Lauener) E. Nardi, comb. nov.; T. anemonoides (Kar. et Kir.) E. Nardi, comb. nov.; T. manshurica (Kom.) E. Nardi, comb. nov.

Tutta la problematica relativa alla tipificazione del nome Isopyrum L. viene ampiamente sviscerata. Come risultato finale il genere è lectotipificato con il tipo di I. fumarioides L., operazione questa che comporta il superamento di una precedente indicazione di I. thalictroides L. quale specie tipo.

In un contesto che affronta globalmente tutti i taxa linneani implicati in materia vengono designati i tipi delle tre specie originali del genere, I. fumarioides, I. thalictroides e I. aquilegioides. Per quanto riguarda I. aquilegioides L., la selezione di un lectotipo effettivo (Morison, Pl. Hist. Univ. Oxon. 3. 1699, sect. XII, tab. I, fig. 5) prevede la sostituzione in questo ruolo di un campione d' erbario già indicato come tale senza tuttavia possederne i requisiti. In seguito alla corretta lectotipificazione, I. aquilegioides risulta conspecifico con I. thalictroides e di questo deve essere ritenuto sinonimo.

La designazione di ‘LINN 717.1’, lectotipo di I. fumarioides, come tipo del genere, comporta in ogni caso alcuni cambiamenti nomenclaturali, che possono soltanto essere diversi in funzione del diverso trattamento tassonomico adottato nei riguardi delle specie linneane. In questa sede viene accettata una recente interpretazione tassonomica che contempla la separazione di I. fumarioides e I. thalictroides in due generi distinti, indicati rispettivamente come Leptopyrum Reichenb., monospecifico, e “Isopyrum L.” (in realtà Isopyrum Reichenb.), comprendente quattro specie. Ne consegue sul piano nomenclature che I. fumarioides L. rimane definitivamente collocato nel genere linneano, mentre per I. thalictroides e per le altre tre specie considerate appartenenti alla stessa circoscrizione generica, cioè I. ludlowii Tamura et Lauener, I. anemonoides Kar. et Kir. e I. manshuricum(Kom.) Kom. ex W.T. Wang et Hsiao, vengono proposte quattro nuove combinazioni sotto il nome Thalictrella A. Richard (tipificato dalla tavola di Clusius in Rar. Pl. Hist. 233. 1601, sub “Ranunc. praecox II. Thalictrifol.” la quale rappresenta il tipo di I. thalictroides L.): Thalictrella thalictroides (L.) E. Nardi, comb. nov.; T. ludlowii (Tamura et Lauener) E. Nardi, comb. nov.; T. anemonoides (Kar. et Kir.) E. Nardi, comb. nov.; T. manshurica (Kom.) E. Nardi, comb. nov.
