The new species Sempervivum riccii is described. This endemism, from the central Apenninic mountain range, was not validly published by Ignazio Ricci in 1961 sub S. italicum (Art. 37.1, ICBN, St Louis Code 2000). The analysis of several herbarium specimens, of many freshly collected plants and field observations have enabled us to value the relationship between S. tectorum and S. riccii. S. riccii is similar to S. tectorum, but differs from it for the persistent glandular hairiness of the basal leaves and of the whole flower-stalk. These two entities show also distinct ecological requirements and a somehow different geographical distribution. S. riccii is clearly distinguishable from S. marmoreum.
