A Painted Viking-Age Sculpture from York

Abstract

This paper records and discusses a recent discovery of a Viking-age stone carving from York, the subsequent cleaning and conservation of which has revealed large areas of original lime plaster priming layer and pigment coating, including the first recorded use in Northumbrian sculpture of lead white.
