Bombay Time/Standard Time

Disclosure Statement

No potential conflict of interest was reported by the author.

Notes

1. This entry draws on my personal observations from the early 1960s and on archival material presented in J. Masselos, ‘Bombay Time’, in Meera Kosambi (ed.), Intersections. Socio-cultural Trends in Maharashtra (Hyderabad: Orient Longman, 2000), pp. 161–86.

2. As a petition of 1905 pointed out: ‘12.30 pm is the time of “Azan” of the second prayer of the Mohamedans, which if Local time be standardised would be 11.51 am when the sun would never be overhead’. Petition reprinted in Bombay Gazette (30 Dec. 1905), p. 5.
