, &

Notes

1 Brian Harley was the charismatic co-founder of the international History of Cartography series, which began publishing its first of six volumes in 1987. He died in 1991. Matthew Edney, Mark Monmonier, Matthew Edney, John Pickles, Gunnar Olsson, Jeremy Crampton and many others have revisited his writings and built upon his legacy.

2 Omer Bartov's inspiring, collaborative 10-year project resulted the book he edited together with Eric Weitz (Barton and Weitz Citation2013).

3 The best of the lot is Magocsi (Citation2002).

4 Olsson describes his work aptly as “a minimalist guide to the landscape of Western culture” (Olsson Citation2007, xi).

5 On the centrality of place, see Brown (Citation2005), Case (Citation2010) and Snyder (Citation2010).
