Notes

1Editor's Note: This manuscript is one of many in a special issue of the Journal of Applied Communication Research on ‘‘Health as Narrative,’’ volume 37, issue 2.

1. Permission was granted by the patient and her family for the author to participate in these medical interactions. Pseudonyms are used for the patient and family members. Details have been altered to protect the identities of participants.

2. Dr. Anderson is involved in a series of active collaborations to develop improved multi-modality means of treating osteosarcoma including the use of radiation and chemotherapy for inoperable cases. Dr. Anderson developed the use of a glutamine mouthwash, sucrose, that reduces the severity and duration of mouth sores after chemotherapy as well as an aerosol treatment. His current clinical efforts and research involve novel antibody treatment for bone sarcoma (anti-IGFR) and giving outpatient chemotherapy regimens that formerly required hospitalization.
